A global potato shortage affects many countries, including Japan, resulting in a shortage of potato products across the country, and not even Tokyo Disney Resort is unaffected.
Japan imports potatoes from North America on a large scale, with Japan being the United State’s largest overseas market for potatoes. The lack of potatoes in Japan results from flooding affecting the Port of Vancouver, a central transit point in the supply chain, and the ongoing impact of COVID-19 on the global distribution network.
Select Tokyo Disneyland Restaurants Stop Selling French Fries
As a result, Tokyo Disney Resort has temporarily suspended the sale of french fries at several restaurants at Tokyo Disneyland. French fries are still offered at Tokyo DisneySea.
Affected restaurants at Tokyo Disneyland include Camp Woodchuck Kitchen in Westernland, La Taverne de Gaston in Fantasyland, Huey, Dewey Loei’s Good Time Cafe in Toontown, and Plazma Ray’s Diner in Tomorrowland.
Prices have been adjusted to account for the lack of french fries.
The shortage has also affected fast food outlets such as McDonald’s (which has over 3,000 restaurants in Japan), resulting in the chain only selling small-sized portions of fries for the foreseeable future, and emergency supplies of frozen fries by air.
However, this shortage doesn’t affect businesses that source their potatoes domestically in Japan. Some businesses are even offering more fries in response to places like McDonald’s having to ration.
