A new Studio Ghibli exhibition has opened in Tokyo! The exhibition titled “Friday Road Show and Ghibli Exhibition” will be held in Tennozu, Tokyo until September 24th, 2023. The exhibition reflects on the decades-long connection between Studio Ghibli and the Nippon TV movie program, “Friday Road Show.”
Friday Road Show is a long-running weekly TV segment that began in 1985, where full-length, family-friendly films are broadcast every Friday evening on Nippon TV (NTV). Studio Ghibli films have been broadcasted on “Friday Road Show” over 200 times since the first airing of “Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind” in 1986. Studio Ghibli even animated the program’s opening titles which ran from 1997 to 2009!
The exhibition features storyboards and character models of almost every Studio Ghibli film, from 1984’s “Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind” to 2020’s “Aya and the Witch”.
The gigantic “Ghibli Magic Lantern Tower” made for the “Ghibli Grand Exposition” Toyama exhibition held in 2018-19 will appear for the first time in Tokyo. The device projects images onto a screen by illuminating handcrafted stained glass depicting Ghibli films and characters.
Additionally, a special photo opportunity will be offered giving guests the opportunity to jump into the poster of their favourite Studio Ghibli films, including Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away, Kiki’s Delivery Service, The Cat Returns, and Ponyo on the Cliff by the Sea.
Fans of Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind will be thrilled to find an entire area featuring giant sculptures of Ohmu, the enormous invertebrates featured in the film. Guests can immerse themselves further with the “Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind: The World of Omushi” AR Experience.
