Starting from May 8, 2023, Japan will no longer require visitors to provide proof of vaccination or a negative COVID-19 test upon arrival, as stated by the Minister of Foreign Affairs. The change is anticipated to aid in the revitalization of inbound tourism to Japan.
This significant change marks a move towards restoring regular social and economic activities in the country. Currently, all travellers must present proof of receiving three COVID-19 doses or a negative coronavirus test taken within 72 hours before departure.
Japan had imposed some of the most stringent tourist restrictions since the pandemic’s outbreak in 2020 and had been slow to reopen to foreign travellers. The country only began welcoming foreign tourists back in June 2022, and only for trips booked through tour agencies. Travellers were also required to obtain a tourist visa prior to October 2022.
