Pingu Exhibition Opens in Tokyo with Interactive Experiences and Exclusive Merchandise

A brand new exhibition venue is opening in the heart of Tokyo, and it’s making its debut with one of the world’s most beloved penguins. The new Yurakucho Museum, located inside the Tokyo International Forum, officially opened on July 10, 2026, with its inaugural exhibition, Not Just Cute!? Pingu Exhibition, running through September 6, 2026.

The Yurakucho Museum is a new exhibition space featuring two galleries designed to host a wide variety of exhibitions and creative events. Pingu has been chosen to launch the venue, celebrating the enduring appeal of the stop-motion animation series created by Swiss filmmaker Ottmar Gutmann.

Not Just Cute!? Pingu Exhibition

Pingu has delighted audiences around the world since 1990 with its expressive clay animation, and unique “Pingu language,” having aired in more than 155 countries and regions. Visitors can see original clay models used during production, learn how the stop-motion animation was created, and discover how Pingu’s expressive movements and iconic language brought the character to life.

The experience also includes interactive elements, allowing guests to engage with the exhibition beyond traditional displays. A recreation of Pingu’s House provides the perfect photo opportunity, while hands-on experiences encourage visitors to explore the world of Pingu through sight and touch.

Miniature Art by Tatsuya Tanaka

A highlight of the exhibition is a special collaboration with renowned miniature artist Tatsuya Tanaka. The display features several of Tanaka’s playful Pingu-inspired creations, including works that transform everyday objects into whimsical scenes featuring Pingu and friends. Fan favourites previously shared online will be joined by brand new miniature artworks created exclusively for the exhibition.

Exclusive Merchandise

A dedicated museum shop will offer a wide range of exclusive Pingu merchandise available only at the exhibition. Highlights include food-themed mascot plush, plush eco bags featuring scenes from the original clay animation, towels, plush toys, hair combs, and even a special Pingu-themed Yogibo cushion.

Custom Merchandise

Guests can also create personalised souvenirs through two custom merchandise experiences. The Flake Sticker Buffet lets visitors build their own clear case using a selection of acrylic stickers, while the Custom Keyboard Keychain offers dozens of interchangeable keyboard-style pieces and chains to create a unique keepsake.

The Not Just Cute!? Pingu Exhibition opens alongside the Yurakucho Museum on July 10, 2026, and runs through September 6, 2026. Some peak dates require advance timed-entry tickets, and guests who purchase tickets before the exhibition opens will receive a randomly selected original clear bookmark while supplies last.
