teamLab Planets Tokyo Expands with New Mind-Bending Installations

teamLab Planets Tokyo has expanded significantly, growing to approximately 1.5 times its original size. This popular immersive museum in Toyosu pushes the boundaries of digital art, seamlessly combining technology, education, and physical interaction. Already a must-visit attraction in Tokyo, visitors can now explore stunning new installations that challenge perception and redefine the digital art experience.

The enhanced exhibition features breathtaking the Catch and Collect Extinct Forest designed to encourage exploration, discovery, and curiosity. While exploring the digital jungle environment, visitors will find representations of extinct and endangered animals, which can be ‘collected’ and studied in detail through the digital collection feature on the visitor’s smartphone.

The mind-bending Athletic Forest is a three-dimensional space designed for physical activity and spatial awareness and features high-energy installations such as the bouncy Caterpillar House’s High-Speed Bouncing Ball, Multi-Jumping Universe, A jumpable surface that simulates the birth of stars, and Graffiti Nature where visitors can see their drawings come to life within a digital ecosphere.

The interactive exhibition also blends physical movement with digital technology with Balance Stepping Stones; interactive stones that react with movement, and Grainy Waterfall on Top of a Hill, a physics-based climbing installation that mimics flowing particles.

In addition to the interactive fun to be had, two breathtaking new artworks, “Autonomous Abstraction” and “When You Stand in the Flow, a Whirlpool Is Born,” will also be exhibited in the Athletics Forest.

Learn! The Amusement Park of the Future is an educational experience built around the concept of collaborative creativity. In the Sketch Umwelt play installation, visitors can draw an aeroplane, dolphin, hawk, or butterfly on paper, then watch as their creation comes to life in a 3D digital world—where it can be controlled using a smartphone.

Other new additions to teamLab Planets include Black Emptiness Table, an outdoor dining area serving Vegan Ramen UZU Tokyo and Orchid Glass House, a relaxing space for drinking tea and alcohol, featuring regrown orchids. Those looking for a memento of their visit can visit the Sketch Factory, where the creatures you drew in “Graffiti Nature” or “Sketch Umwelt” can be made into original badges, hand towels, T-shirts, tote bags, and paper crafts!
