TeamLab, an internationally active art collective renowned for its stunning immersive living art installations, is set to open its first permanent art museum in Kyoto. Set to open in October, TeamLab Biovortex Kyoto will showcase many interactive artworks that have never been seen in Japan before.
The immersive art space is part of a new creative hub within the Kyoto Station Southeast Area Project in Minami Ward. The museum features art pieces made of materials you wouldn’t normally expect in conventional art, and in typical teamLab fashion, you can step into the installations.
The Eternal Universe of Words was created for the “Prayer” exhibition in Tokyo, but was not able to be enjoyed by the public due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Designed to be enjoyed while lying down, the piece features calligraphy being written in an infinite space.
Forest of Resonating Lamps: One Stroke – Fire, which was previously exhibited at TeamLab Borderless in Odaiba from 2018 to 2022, will also debut in Kyoto. The work features hundreds of magical lanterns.
At first glance, Massless Amorphous Sculpture resembles a cluster of floating soap bubbles. But this is no ordinary sculpture — it isn’t solid, and it isn’t gas either. Described by teamLab as a ‘Higher Order Sculpture’, it’s made from energy, movement, and balance.
Another of teamLab’s ‘Higher Order Sculptures’, Morphing Continuum features floating, glowing spheres that drift and shift like a living organism. Described as a ‘biocosmos’, it’s a dynamic system sustained by invisible forces such as airflow, light, and energy.
