Tokyo Disneyland Space Mountain Construction Update: January 2026

Tokyo Disneyland’s original Space Mountain, which debuted with the park in 1983, closed permanently in August 2024 to make way for a completely reimagined version of the iconic indoor coaster. The new Space Mountain is set to open in 2027 and promises enhanced thrills and next-generation effects. We recently hopped aboard the Tokyo Disney Resort Line to check out the progress of this massive project!

The new show building is situated further back in Tomorrowland, behind the previous coaster’s location, and opens up Tomorrowland with a large, open plaza featuring futuristic sculptures and updated landscaping (concept art below). The changes are part of a wider Tomorrowland refresh, including a new Wreck-It Ralph attraction replacing Buzz Lightyear’s Astro Blasters.

The new Space Mountain features a sleek, curved silhouette that marks a clear departure from the original. Its crisp white exterior and bold lines give it a far more modern look, standing in contrast to the classic design of the previous version, which had taken on a yellowed appearance over the years.

Even from the monorail, the sheer scale of the project is hard to miss. Construction is still underway, with scaffolding wrapping around the rear and roof, though most of the attraction’s defining design elements are now in place. Let’s take a closer look at the construction progress!

After tracking the demolition of the original ride and the progress of the new build, we’re excited to finally take a ride on the new Space Mountain when it opens in 2027!
