Tokyo Winter Illuminations 2021 Guide

Winter Illuminations in Japan are a big deal, however, Tokyo’s are next level – transforming the city into a sparkling wonderland, covering buildings and trees with millions of colourful sparkling lights, making for magical and romantic evening strolls. Tokyo Midtown Illuminations

This yearly illumination event grows more elaborate and festive with each passing year. The illuminations feature LED light displays, an illuminated tree-lined promenade, a large number of Christmas trees and a 3-meter tall snow globe with falling snow (until December 12). In addition to Christmas decorations, guests can go skating at an illuminated outdoor ice skating rink.

Roppongi Hills Illuminations

The Roppongi Hills Illuminations light up the 400 meter-long Keyakizaka Street with over 700 thousand sparkling blue and white LED lights against the backdrop of Tokyo Tower. Additional illuminations and a four-meter Christmas tree can be found in the surrounding area.

Tokyo Dome City Winter Illumination

The Tokyo Dome City Winter Illuminations are considered to be some of the best in Tokyo, featuring a staggering 2,000,000 LED lights covering the Tokyo Dome City area. This year’s event is titled “Illumination that makes you want to take photos” and features a Twitter-based photo competition and stamp rally.

Marunouchi Illuminations

The ever-popular Marunouchi Illumination is celebrating its 20th year this year in 2021. The illuminations feature approximately 1.2 million champagne gold LED lights lighting up the 1.2 kilometre tree-lined Marunouchi Naka-dori street. Illuminations start at 3 pm, giving you plenty of time to take in the view. The newly opened large-scale outdoor plaza, Tokyo Torch Park will be illuminated for the first time during the event.

Marunouchi Bright Christmas: Harry Potter Illuminations

While you’re Marunouchi, be sure to check out the Harry Potter-themed Marunouchi Bright Christmas in celebration of the 20th anniversary of “Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone”. Guests can take part in a digital stamp rally themed to the film and enjoy decorations themed to the Wizarding World. Meguro-gawa Minna no Illumination

From 10th December, the trees along the Meguro River are illuminated by over 350,000 pink LED lights representing cherry blossom. Like many on this list, the illuminations are environmentally friendly with low energy consumption.

Sagamiko Illumillion: Sailor Moon Winter Illumination Eternal

To celebrate their 13th anniversary season, Sagamiko Resort has launched a special collaboration with Sailor Moon, themed to Sailor Moon Eternal movies. ‘Sailor Moon Winter Illuminations Eternal’ features 6 million lights, turning the making it one of the largest in the Kanto Region. Guests can take a ride on the Sailor Warrior Guardian Star Lift, see a reproduction of the moon kingdom and Crystal Tokyo. A number of rides have been rethemed to Sailor Moon, and special themed food and drinks are available for purchase.

Yebisu Garden Place

Yebisu Garden Palace is celebrating its 20th year of illuminations in 2021. The popular long-running event features over 100,000 lights, a 10 meter high Christmas tree and a stunning 5-meter Baccarat chandelier made with approximately 8,500 crystals. Guests can also attend the annual Christmas Market, buy festive food and drinks and go ice skating.
