The JR Group has announced that the popular ‘Japan Rail Pass’ for tourists will be subject to a significant increase in price as of October 2023.
Under the updated pricing system, all types of Japan Rail Pass tickets will face an increase of 65% to 77%. For instance, a 14-day ‘ordinary car’ pass will climb from ¥47,250 ($353.07 USD) to ¥80,000 ($597.80 USD), representing a 69% increase. An exact date for the price increase has yet to be announced.
The Japan Rail Pass has long been a staple for tourists visiting Japan, allowing guests to access the huge network of trains, Shinkansen and local buses operated by Japan Railways (JR) in one convenient value-for-money multi-use ticket.
The new pricing structure is as follows:

Weirdly enough.. I’m not mad at this. Like yeah it’s a bummer for me as a visitor but using this passes at the current price is almost too good a deal that travellers are being given by JR Rail. The price of this pass has BARELY changed in the last 10 years. I paid around 577,000 yen for the 21 day Ordinary pass when I went in 2012 and it was a steal. When in was looking up prices for my friend’s trip this year in was shocked at how little prices had changed.
Just adding up the big trips I did it (excluding local hops, buses etc) was well over 100,000 yen. So honestly, even with these large increases with a bit of extra planning you can still save a significant amount of money. In a time where pricing for everything has been skyrocketing everywhere I can’t say, though shocking, the increases are unfair based on how powerful these passes are for travel. Just food for thought!!
